Anger

Anger is a normal human emotion in that it is something we all experience from time to time. Everyone feels annoyed, frustrated, irritated, or even very angry which may be reflected in shouting, yelling, swearing, or in some cases even physical aggression towards people (i.e., self and others) or objects (i.e., smashing things). Other subtle forms of anger also exist such as brooding, withdrawal or silent anger.

Anger isn’t necessarily debilitating as when controlled, anger can be helpful in terms of motivating us to make positive changes or take constructive action.

Anger is connected to some type of frustration whereby things maybe haven’t turned out the way you planned, you didn’t get something you wanted, or others haven’t acted in the way you would like them too. Anger is also entangled with a range of other emotions such as sadness, shame, hurt, guilt, or fear. Unfortunately, many people find it challenging to express these emotions and therefore the anger spills out.

Example:

  • You are running late for work and on your way there, you are caught in a traffic jam.

  • Somebody is rude to you
